I'll be writing this in English so international google searchers can find this - because it also will include a link to a howto for long-distance exporting and importing a vehicle. I've looked for it, but couldn't find much experience from other users and what it takes to do.

So, this part is the placeholder for the export process. It contains of:
 • Check regulation
 • Create financial overview
 • Contact shipping companies
 • Apply for import approval
 • Receive import approval
 • Arrange with shipping company
 • Check and modify car
 • Arrange export documents
 • Ship the car
 • Get customs clearance
 • Obtain roadworthy
 • Register car and obtain license plate
More information can be found on my website as soon as the process is finished (link soon!).

So, I was an avid member here, and everybody knew me with my Express GTT. Unfortunately, I had to sell it because I went to Taiwan in 2007 to study my master's degree there. I was very lucky to find the ONLY Renault 5 there, and it was for sale too! So, after spending much money buying it and even more fixing it over the years, I moved again, this time to Australia. I checked for all the Australian import rules, but eventually decided not to (because you needed to convert the car from LHD to RHD).

So it probably comes as a surprise that now, after 2 years without a Renault 5 (they don't exist in Australia), I decide to import anyway? Well, they changed the regulations, and there now is a special club license which allows me to drive LHD cars for a maximum of 90 days per year. Good thing!

And while I was at it, and the opportunity was there, I decided to just buy two at once. And two very special R5s at that!

Now about the cars:
I've found some items on this forum already about the GTT, but only one RTC user owned it and was actually not posting too much. The topic link is here.

Yes, it's a unique GTT EVO!

This photo is from my historical photo archive of 2005 (actually, I downloaded all the meeting photos of everybody of all meetings I attended myself - so if someone wants an old photo of his/her car, range 2003 to 2006...). When I found it at Artvo, it was in not that good condition anymore.

I read somewhere on the forum someone scratched the bonnet (hood), so it was painted black. Additionally the car had a lot of stickers... A summary of the history of the car based on Robert Turbo's forum entry:
 • 1997: white, from guy who works at garage.
 • Around 2002: Sander (friend of JiggyMF, RTC), purple, bought that way.
 • May 1, 2005: Robert Turbo (RTC), purple, bought that way.
 • Begin 2006: Robert fixes and resprays skirts & bumpers, bumpers were cracked. Everything welded and treated for rust. July 2006 finished with it.
 • April 2007: Smoke during starting. Could be turbo, but forum recommends to do nothing.
 • August 2007: Turbo replaced.
I don't like those stickers, and wanted to have a good looking car to go to Australia. So, I initially decided to respray the complete front and some rear parts where the paint was getting loose. Then however, when we found out the total price and all other things I wanted - I asked how much a full respray would cost. That percentually not being too different (and how often do you export a car...) I decided to completely respray it.

Originally the car was white, but it'll be pearl white when it'll be shipped. Of course, a crack in the front bumper is repaired, some little rust is being repaired and new dorpels are welded. Looks like the 2006 treatment was not that good...

One current thing is that I'd like to have a standard ph2 GTT grille, but they're nowhere to be found anymore... So if someone feels like making this Australian GTT to be a showstopper... please offer me one for sale??

Some more photos of the current progress:

EVO fuel cap was missing - Bart made a new one from scratch. Dorpel is not yet welded, but preparation is ongoing.

Car stripped and treated for little rust before going to the painter. Window needed replacing too, so ideal moment!

Things are going very well and very fast. Even though I'm posting this from Australia, Bart's doing an awesome job in getting the GTT in show-state for Australia.

Then, I said I will have two cars. The second car doesn't need so much work, but is nevertheless unique. It's a Renault 5 GTS EBS, a convertible therefore, but it's the only one which has ALL the options. Electric roof, electric windows (front and back), remote control, leather seats and steering, GTT look - all the options EBS offered, are on this one. EBS made 3 full-option convertibles: one does not exist anymore, one is in parts and rusted, and then this one: mine!

Well, I still decided to repair the roof (it was ripped at some parts) and the little dents are fixed and sprayed as well.

So, I'll be cruising in show-style in sunny Melbourne, Australia (and probably many other places). Awesome!

Thanks all, bedankt allemaal! Ja, het was best een snelle beslissing eigenlijk, maar ik kijk er erg naar uit! En ik ben toch wel een beetje gek toch - was die Express GTT daar niet het bewijs van?

The cars will really leave The Netherlands on March 17 - on March 11 they should be finished. Then it takes 1.5 month before I can pick them up, on April 29. But still it will be a surprise for me, because I haven't seen them fixed and sprayed or in nice sunny weather (Dutch weather in winter... snow...). So it really is like ordering a new car and waiting for it to arrive!

Keep you posted...

The car is at the painter now! Some parts needed to be straightened, especially near the back door. As I've read that Robert Turbo had some issues with the spoiler he had on it, some dents were there. So, now they're gone!

@Abel: Yes, the GTT will be pearl white, all the same colour. It's a ph2 and I think with the EVO kit it would be the best to have all the same color. I wonder though if the EVO ph2 had side stickers too, but they can't be found...

The cabrio has all the options EBS had available - and it has a standard GTS engine. Those options are not only a full GTT bodykit, but also an electric roof, all windows electric (even the small rear ones), remote locking, leather interior and leather steering wheel. This is how it was delivered in 1988, so that car is completely original.

Haha you crazy dutch!

How come i still saw quit a bit of LHD cars in OZ, are they imported by people that lived overseas for a while and took it back home?

The EBS has been Rob's right? There should be a turbo engine in there as well mate!

In Australia, LHD cars can be used on a special club license or under normal registration if they are 30 years and older. Not sure if you only spotted old cars, but it's quite common for antique and old cars to be imported as LHD. Unfortunately the R5 is not that old yet, so for the next 5 years I'll be driving them with a club license. This license allows 90 days of driving per year - but as I will not use them as daily drives anyway, that will be fine. I have more cars (non-Renault, unfortunately...)

The EBS has been Bart's (from Artvo) - it's certainly not a GTT. Would be even more unique, sure, but I think one GTT and one EBS GTS is fine :)

Before it was from Bart, i'm pretty sure it was from Rob out of the south from Holland, he drove it for quite a while as well.
This guy: http://www.renault-tuning.com/profile.p ... file&u=914

And i have testdriven a BMW E28 5 series 528 from 1984 in 2009, that was on normal license plates and LHD, also in Melbourne Victoria.
Was only a wreck, so didnt bought it, otherwise would be a nice Ozzy drifter >)

Anywayz, good luck with the cars on the other side, cool idea.

Are you talking about me?

First of all: Joost congratulation with your 2 R5s. I hope you'll have all the fun in them at the other side of the world.

Second: Bart (from Artvo) bought (well, it was almost a steal) the EBS from me somewhere last year. I have had this car for a couple of years and I bought it from a guy in Sint Oedenrode, Brabant.

To bad to see an original dutch car being exported, but here is a picture of the car when I had it:

Just for info, it is EBS no 524.

But I think I need to dissapoint you Joost. The EBS has lost of options, electical roof and windows, leather seats, roof cover and long haired carpet.
But the GTT kit was no EBS option. It was sold as a GTS, hence the engine, with GTS looks. A GTT kit was never on the spec list of EBS, and this was done by a previous owner. In fact is was done by the guy form which the person in Sint Oedenrode bought it from. Actually, he didn't bought it, but traded it agains a Hyundai H200 Van or something.

Nevertheless, if you need more info, just send me a PM and I'll tell you all I can about this EBS.
