Richmod Richmodding the ECU's will give you noticable more power and torque. Peak torque will be around 225 to 250 Nm. Max power is around 170 to 175 bhp. For more information contact rpruen his e-mail adress can be found on the 480 forum.
Supermod This richmod can be done on the Turbo versions with both the orange and blue ECU's,
but preferably the blue ones. The engine needs some new hardware to cope with the power increase. The rear enginemount needs to be replaced with the stronger version, and also the clutch needs upgrading. The gearbox (M59 or alternatively the Renault JB5...) can handle power up-to 250 Bhp.
For older types (with the orange ECU), the diameter of the flywheel and clutch is smaller than the newer types. If the mod is applied to this type, then check if the flywheel is completely smooth. The standard clutch set-up can cope with some power increase, but only when all parts are like new. Otherwise a racing clutch set-up is advised.
The older types can ce converted to newer specs by fitting the bigger diameter flywheel, but this also needs replacing the old ECU with the blue one.
The newer types with the bigger flywheel need the Volvo clutch spring and a plate from a 2 litre renault. These are grippier than the stock Volvo ones, but wears faster. Otherwise a race clutch can be fitted.
On standard fuel system the mod can cope with 15-16 psi of boost(1.0 - 1.1 bar), with bigger injectors it can cope with boost up-to 28 psi (1.9 bar).
The injectors needed for this can be sourced from Volvo or scavenged from a 740turbo (B230FT) or V6 engine. These are Bosch injectors (0 280 150 804) with high resistance.
The 2bar MAP sensor needs to be replaced with a 3bar version.
The mod prefers a bigger turbo, like the Garret T25 or T3. The T25 boosts @ 2800 rpm and the T3 boosts @ 3600 rpm.
A Saab 900/9000 T25 bolts direct to the manifold. Some want a bit of port matching using the volvo gasket and a rotary file. The exhaust end is more tricky since an adapter plate has to be made to fit the 'old style' T2 elbow to it (the studs are too far off to make it fit directly), then it will bolt up to the downpipe. Everything else is a direct swap, inc oil and water pipes.
A Saab 900/Volvo 940 TD T3 will fit the outlet elbow from the T2 above, no adapter plate needed. However, the intake side needs to be worked on though. The ports need to line up (manifold to turbo) and then new holes have to be drilled to fit the standard studs on the 480. It works ok, and everything more or less lines up, including the oil feed and return. A bit of bending of pipes is needed though.
